On 7th January the government approved the 2008-2012 Catalonian Passenger Transport Plan which establishes the primary courses of action for the improvement of both rail and road inter-urban passenger transport service until 2012.
The objectives of the plan are:
• To increase bus service by 30%, with 24 new direct connections, 16 semi-direct connections and improved service on existing lines
• To create 9 short-distance lines in Tarragona, Lleida and Gerona and to establish 5 new regional high-speed lines
• To restructure Barcelona short-distance lines and increase the frequency of service and capacity of train lines
• To extend the integrated fare system to all of Catalonia by 2012
• To improve intermodality, coordinating functionality and service schedules of different modes of transport in order to reduce waiting times for transfers
• To adapt the entire public transport network for use by persons with disabilities
• To implement 9 inter-urban bus lanes and create 9 new bus stations and shelters in order to promote the use of public transport
• To improve user information through the incorporation of new technologies in order to offer up-to-date information throughout the region
• To provide 840 million euros of funding for public road transport from 2008 to 2012
