The DPTOP subsidizes the urban transport with 1.1 million euros (01/03/2010)

The Official Journal of the Government of Catalonia (DOGC) has published a resolution from the Minister of Town and Country Planning and Public Works (DPTOP), Joaquim Nadal, announcing subsidies available to promote improvements to urban passenger transport. The subsidies total 1.1 million euros.

• These grants, which total 1.1 million euros, are to be used for improvements to urban passenger transit and will allow for more frequent runs on bus routes, new equipment at bus stops and the renovation of the fleet.

• Since 2005, when this line of subsidies went into effect, 4.4 million euros have been granted for the purpose of funding actions aimed at achieving urban sustainability policies.

The DPTOP will make subsidies totalling 1.1 million euros available to local entities all over Catalonia that are not a part of the Barcelona Area ATM in order to promote quality and improved provision of urban public transport services.

The actions subsidised to improve urban transport include creating bus lanes, improving bus stops, installing special stop lights for buses and increasing the numbers of lines and stops. What is more, these subsidies, which have been granted since 2005, also include increasing the frequency of runs and expanding the running hours of bus lines. These subsidies are also intended for other actions such as the implementation of measures to facilitate access to public transportation for people with limited mobility, the provision of service information at bus stops, and the acquisition of new vehicles to improve existing fleets.

Applications from local entities

These grants can be applied for by local entities that are not part of the Barcelona Area Metropolitan Transit Authority (Barcelona Area ATM) and that provide urban public transport services.

The total amount of each grant is determined based on the population of every municipality, the number of passengers who used public transport during the year 2009, and the public transport service’s financial results from the previous year. Since 2005, when this line of subsidies went into effect, 4.4 million euros have been granted for the purpose of promoting improvements to urban passenger transport.

This grant programme was put in place to contribute funding for actions directed at achieving urban sustainability policies realised through the improvement of urban public transport services.
