Today Xavier Sabaté opened the presentation event for Sustainable and Safe Mobility Week
Xavier Sabaté, the government delegate in Camp de Tarragona, stated this morning that “it is vital that we increase the use of public transport and efficient systems” in order to achieve more efficient, sustainable and safe mobility. Mr. Sabaté opened the presentation meeting for Sustainable and Safe Mobility Week and described the objectives of the Camp de Tarragona Transit Development Plan, whose provisional completion target is 2015 and which will be definitively approved this year. The plan aims to increase the use of public transit by 7% by the year 2015, reaching 51 million annual journeys, compared with the current 34 million.
Xavier Sabaté also stated that the excess of tropospheric ozone (which is regularly measured by the observation network in Parc de la Ciutat) is not only caused by industrial pollution, but that it is also and especially caused by the gases emitted by combustion vehicles. Therefore, he has committed to promoting electric cars and boats in order to decrease noise and atmospheric pollution as well as the contamination of ports, a strategy which was described in more detail by the director of the Mobility and Large Infrastructure Programme of the Government of Catalonia, Miguel Ángel Dombriz, during his explanation of the IVECAT programme to incorporate electric vehicles.
Finally, Mr. Sabaté noted the importance of matching outgoing rail gauges with EU standards, considering the increase in activity the port of Tarragona in recent years and forecasts for the future, to prevent merchandise from going out by road transport.
The presentation event, which was organised by the Camp de Tarragona Territorial Transit Authority (ATM), was held in the Pau Casals Room of the local government offices. The director of the ATM of Camp de Tarragona, Juan Manrubia, spoke at the meeting, explaining the basic principles of Sustainable and Safe Mobility Week, which will take place this September. Guillem Rovira (Synergy), Haritz Ferrando (Bicycle Club of Catalonia), and Albert Obiols (Foundation for Sustainable Mobility and Safety) also took part in the event throughout the morning. The meeting was closed by the territorial directors of Territorial Policy and Public Works in Camp de Tarragona and Terres de l’Ebre, Joaquim Margalef and Antoni Sabaté.
