The DPTOP restructures bus services between the Reus Airport and Tarragona

• Reus (Parc Sant Jordi) - Tarragona: a new direct line will be created with ten daily journeys – five each way – that will connect Reus and Tarragona without stopping at the Reus airport. This will improve the connection between the two cities without timetables that depend on scheduled flights.

• Reus Airport - Tarragona: a new service will be created to facilitate access to the centre of Tarragona from the airport, with timetables adjusted to the work schedules of airport staff and to the arrivals and departures of different flights.

The Ministry of Town and Country Planning and Public Works is implementing a series of improvements to the line that currently connects the city of Reus with the airport and the centre of Tarragona, which will go into effect as of 8th March.

The improvements will consist of restructuring the line that currently links the centre of Reus, the Reus Airport and the city of Tarragona in order to offer better service and to better match routes and timetables to the needs detected in the area.

With the implementation of this line, the government hopes to make public transit services more competitive and to respond to the existing demand for easy, fast connections between the municipalities of Reus and Tarragona and between the Reus Airport and Tarragona city centre, while better accommodating passengers by means of more convenient timetables.

To do this, the current connections will be restructured through the creation of two new services from the existing line: one to link the centre of Reus with the centre of Tarragona and another to connect the Reus Airport with the city of Tarragona.

These services are managed by the company La Hispano Igualadina, SAU.

Reus - Tarragona, without stopping at the airport

A new service will be created to directly connect Reus (Parc Sant Jordi) and the centre of Tarragona (bus station), without stopping at the Reus Airport.

This will allow passengers to travel quickly and easily between the two cities, without timetables affected by scheduled arriving and departing flights at the airport. Additionally, more journeys will be offered during rush hour in coordination with work timetables to help workers get to their jobs first thing in the morning.

This service will also stop at the Reus bus station to allow passengers to change to and from other lines, both urban and interurban, in addition to connecting to the Tarragona bus station.

In total, ten daily journeys will be offered, five in each direction, which will directly link the two cities with a journey time of approximately 40 minutes. Buses will depart at 6.55, 10.40, 15.20, 18.20, and 20.20 from Reus and at 7.10, 12.40, 15.10, 17.25, and 20.10 from Tarragona.

Reus Airport - Tarragona

From the current line, another service will be created that will directly connect the Reus Airport with the city of Tarragona, with new timetables to better accommodate flight arrival and departure times. This line will also facilitate the mobility of airport staff that travel to work by bus from the capital of Tarragona province.

The DPTOP subsidizes the urban transport with 1.1 million euros

• These grants, which total 1.1 million euros, are to be used for improvements to urban passenger transit and will allow for more frequent runs on bus routes, new equipment at bus stops and the renovation of the fleet.

• Since 2005, when this line of subsidies went into effect, 4.4 million euros have been granted for the purpose of funding actions aimed at achieving urban sustainability policies.

The DPTOP will make subsidies totalling 1.1 million euros available to local entities all over Catalonia that are not a part of the Barcelona Area ATM in order to promote quality and improved provision of urban public transport services.

The actions subsidised to improve urban transport include creating bus lanes, improving bus stops, installing special stop lights for buses and increasing the numbers of lines and stops. What is more, these subsidies, which have been granted since 2005, also include increasing the frequency of runs and expanding the running hours of bus lines. These subsidies are also intended for other actions such as the implementation of measures to facilitate access to public transportation for people with limited mobility, the provision of service information at bus stops, and the acquisition of new vehicles to improve existing fleets.

Applications from local entities

These grants can be applied for by local entities that are not part of the Barcelona Area Metropolitan Transit Authority (Barcelona Area ATM) and that provide urban public transport services.

The total amount of each grant is determined based on the population of every municipality, the number of passengers who used public transport during the year 2009, and the public transport service’s financial results from the previous year. Since 2005, when this line of subsidies went into effect, 4.4 million euros have been granted for the purpose of promoting improvements to urban passenger transport.

This grant programme was put in place to contribute funding for actions directed at achieving urban sustainability policies realised through the improvement of urban public transport services.

Catalonia celebrates Sustainable and Safe Mobility Week

In 1999 an institutional commission made up of several Catalan public and private organisations was set up to promote the use of sustainable and environmentally friendly public transport among the different city and town councils and to coordinate joint activities. The origin of Sustainable Mobility Week goes back to 1999 when the first day without cars was held, which on that occasion was called “el día de la autoreflexión” (the day of self-reflection).

Because of its great popular success and high levels of participation, the programme of activities was extended to an entire week. Sustainable Mobility Week was first held in Catalonia in 2001 and other European countries supporting the day without cars have also celebrated a European Sustainable Mobility Week since 2002. So today Catalonia welcomes Mobility Week along with more than 30 countries and 1,300 cities across Europe.
